Connecting, celebrating, campaigning for Queensland resources
September 2025 marks a significant milestone – fifteen years since the first Bowen Basin Mining Club event. Born out of a backyard BBQ conversation in Mackay, the BBMC grew from an idea to impact how the Bowen Basin mining community connects, collaborates, and grows together.
The BBMC was a simple solution to a geographic problem – connecting businesses in meaningful relationships in a widely dispersed industry. Today the BBMC is celebrating fifteen years of open communication, forged partnerships, and countless ‘handshake moments’ that have influenced our industry.
By the numbers
From our inaugural Networking Luncheon on 24 September 2010 with 156 attendees, we’ve now welcomed over 110 speakers across 75+ luncheons, with an average attendance of 190. Our largest gathering was nearly 400 people in April 2016, and in 2018 we witnessed history when Adani announced at a BBMC luncheon that they had secured financing for the Carmichael Mine, declaring “we have finance and we are ready to start.”
Each statistic represents a multitude of connections made, problems solved, and opportunities realised.
The real success stories
We don’t keep formal records, but we know the true measure of BBMC’s success lies in the countless business relationships forged over good food and genuine conversation. We’ve witnessed:
- Instances where conversations sparked solutions for example, a forklift company CEO declaring “that’s solved an issue on my site”, leading to a significant supply contract.
- Major contractors like CIVEO and Thiess securing meetings with previously inaccessible speakers through our sponsor networking sessions.
- Many introductions that have evolved from business card exchanges to multi-million dollar partnerships.
These moments – where a casual conversation becomes a game-changing business relationship – embody everything the BBMC was created to achieve.
Resilience runs deep
The past fifteen years have truly tested the mining sector’s mettle. We’ve navigated global financial uncertainty, commodity price volatility, volcanic regulatory changes, not to mention a global pandemic.
We’ve hosted luncheons despite cyclones bearing down on the coast and flood waters rising. When traditional face-to-face networking was restricted, we adapted. Who recalls the Queensland Mining Awards 2020 with socially-distanced tables and seated networking? You could have a drink, just not stand with it in your hands!
Expanding our impact
Our growth from a bi-monthly luncheon series has helped to advocate for Queensland’s mining businesses on wider platforms:
Queensland Mining Awards (QMA) – launched in 2014
Starting as the Queensland Mining Contractors Awards, QMA has evolved into the premier celebration of mining innovation and excellence, now attracting over 560 industry leaders to the competition and Gala Dinner.
BBMC Yearbook – launched in 2018
Our 200+ page publication has achieved extensive reach into boardrooms, site offices, and executive desks across the country, providing year-round visibility for our industry’s achievements and capabilities. We’re working on the seventh edition right now.
The BBMC Crib Room Podcast – launched in 2020
We launched our podcast to ensure that industry insights and thought leadership continued to flow, without face to face opportunities. During this period, we also published a limited series of interviews with key leaders.
Hunter Mining Club – launched in 2025
We’ve expanded our reach beyond Queensland with the establishment of the Hunter Mining Club. HMC brings the same ‘no-media’ networking approach and frank conversation format to connect the Hunter and wider NSW mining industry with information and opportunities. This expansion is a result of the proven value of the BBMC concept.
Looking forward to the next 15
As we launch into our sixteenth year, the fundamentals remain unchanged. We’re still offering free membership, sourcing exceptional speakers, and running unparalleled networking opportunities. But we’re not standing still.
The Bowen and Galilee Basins continue to evolve, with new technologies, sustainability imperatives, and global market dynamics reshaping our industry. The BBMC will continue to be where these changes are discussed first, where collaborations are sparked, and where the future of mining in Queensland is strongly advocated.
More than a ‘club’ – a networking community
Fifteen years ago, we moved from idea to action, connecting mining professionals across the state. Today, we’ve built something far more valuable – an interstate community of innovators, problem-solvers, and industry champions who gather not just to network, but to drive our sector forward.
From all of us at the BBMC, thank you to every member, speaker, sponsor, and supporter who has made this journey possible. The next fifteen years start now, and we couldn’t be more excited about what lies ahead.
